I am graduate student in the Entomology Department at
the University of Manitoba working on bee diversity
in the Yellowquill Mixed Grass Prairie Preserve in
southwestern Manitoba (nearest town is Treesbank MB.).
I was out at the preserve yesterday and observed
several adult monarch butterflies at at least two
sites (lat & long= 49E40'51"N 99E33'15"W and
49E41'28"N 99E34'29). I could not say for sure how
many I saw exactly, but I would estimate that it was
in the range of about four to six, total. I observed
most of them foraging on Lithospermum canescens (hoary
puccoon) which was just a few days past its flowering
peak at that point.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Treesbank, MB
