Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 06/03/2006

Number: 1

Female rufous first spotted 6/03/06 feeding from feeders and flowers. It prefers feeders with tubular openings (hovers). Sometimes sits at saucer feeders. Flowers visted include fushia, nicotina, coral bells, million bells, and honeysuckle. The female rufous appears to be mature, and is aggressive towards Anna's hummingbirds (year-round residents), especially males. Several mature male and female Anna's also visiting feeders, and several immature male and female Anna's. Male rufous has not been sighted. I have not seen more than one female rufous at the same time, so it appears to be a single sighting. The bird has been feeding from our feeders for about a week.
