First Tiger Swallowtail at Garretson Forge and Farm in Fair Lawn, NJ. The tigers mostly lay their eggs in the large old willow to the west of the farm. Five years ago we planted a Tulip tree to serve as an alternate larval host plant for the tiger swallowtail butterflies to lay their eggs on. It’s growing in the lightly wooded eastern end of the farm designated as “Caterpillar Corner.” It hasn’t bloomed yet, but it’s nearly as big as other tulip trees I’ve seen in bloom, so maybe next year I will be reporting on that.
