All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 06/05/2006

Number: 1

We were blessed this spring to observe many White Pelicans socializing together along certain areas of the Arkansas River here in north-central Oklahoma. June 5th was the last time we saw the clan along the river. We first started seeing them in April and consisted of apx 60 of the white winged wonders. The last time we spotted them, they were foating all around in a relatively small area...must be a tightly-knit group and possibly migrating back north. What surprised me was the fact they all stayed in or near that one area for a full two months before moving on. They were located 7 miles east of Newkirk, OK right under the Arkansas River bridge. This year is absolutely the first time I've ever spotted these majestic birds sticking in this area this late in the year, especially considering the heat, ranging from the 60's at night, up to the lower 100's during the day.
