Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/18/2006

Number: 1

On June 18th I got a Monarch at a spot that I frequently go to
butterfly which is near Kinsmen Sports Centre (Edmonton). I'm very familiar with the species as well as the Viceroy and I
got a really good look at it, so I am absolutely certain that it
was a Monarch. In fact it was one of the largest ones I've seen. I didn't think anything of it since they are quite common back home, but Jason informed me that they are not as prevalent here so I thought I'd post the sighting.

Forwarded by John R. Spence of the University of Alberta to Don Davis of Toronto, Ontario. Don added these notes:

1)This makes 8 Canadian provinces that have seen
monarchs, and this is a very northerly sighting (53N).

2)I'm hoping that this is not the case, but I've
discovered a few companies do butterfly releases in
the Edmonton area. I am making some inquiries as to
whether such releases are common in Edmonton this time
of year.
