Signs of Fall

Date: 08/07/2006

Number: 1

For the past several weeks we have watching two Barred Owls who appear young. We have many hollow trees in the area. However we often see them very early in the evening (6:00) and they are still around at 6:00 am. They do not Hoot - but make a whistling call to each other - the whistle/screech starts low and goes up in pitch - they seem to call and answer back and forth. They are not afraid of us and will let us get with 5 feet of them and take pictures. The past few nights the crows have been harassing them but they stay put. They feed on the ground - bugs, voles, even earth worms. They are facinating to watch.
