Based on what I'm seeing in Vermont and Maine, we're going to have a GREAT monarch migration this autumn. Milkweed drops out on Maine coastal islands, too much salt spray I think. On one inshore island (Birch Island in Casco Bay) I found a lone milkweed patch in a small sheltered meadow. It was INFESTED with monarch caterpillars, never seen such a thing. Of course they are very mobile, concentrate along the coast, and each ovipositing female leaves her calling cards....
