Hiking up Mt. Hood in Oregon (Aug. 14, 2006), we witnessed literally tens of thousands of monarchs flying up a cliff that ascended from a glacier at about 9,000 - 10,000 feet. It was amazing. Monarchs swarmed us for nearly 2 hours at those elevations. There were hardly any at 6,000 feet.
Editor's Note: This is most likely a sighting of "painted lady" butterflies. So many monarchs in the western US and at this altitude is unlikely. However, this is not uncommon for painted ladies, a species that erupts in large numbers in the west.
