Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/20/2006

Number: 1

A warm sunny day helped 12 more monarchs to hatch between 1pm & 4pm. I got wonderful pictures of one of them making it's escape from his casing. They are the most beautiful dark orange- when untouched. Also got a picture of a chrysalis that you can actually see the wings through the paper like chrysalis. I had never experience it before. It was really amazing!!
My butterfly weed is in a nice warm south exposure. I have only noticed 2 males- the majority have been female. Two more I know of hatched the following day-Monday Aug. 21, when I got home from work at 4pm. Don't know if there were more prior to that. The last chrysalis that I had been watching has hatched today. I know I probably wasn't finding all that were there. I noticed 3 caterpillars still yesterday- Aug. 23, but they have disappeared now, too. I never did get to see them shedding their skin- I had hoped to. I can't find chrysalis', but am hoping that they will also hatch.
