Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/26/2006

Number: 1

At 2 pm yesterday, I watched 2 Monarchs whirling above the lawn chasing one another higher and higher in circles against a stormy sky. Playing, courting or fighting? At sunset, my rumbling 4 wheeler, disturbed a single Monarch from the branches of a dying poplar, damaged in a recent storm. It flew jerkily around and returned to the tree. No sign of migrating butterflies yet. The engine vibration often proves useful in causing a flock to flutter wings. Sunset's afterglow sometimes makes seeing them difficult.
