My family has left our 11.5 acre homesite almost completely unmowed, instead allowing the once farmland to revert back to native forest. Over the past 7 years we have planted over 1000 native conifer trees, put up about 14 bluebird/tree swallow bird houses, winter-fed birds, summer-fed hummingbirds, and planted flower gardens for butterflies/hummingbirds. Last year our first milkweed grew and this year we have counted over 25 monarch caterpillars! We had been collecting milkweed pods in the fall and releasing the seeds on our property for about three years before we successfully found our first milkweed growing last year!
