Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/29/2006

Number: 1

A couple weeks ago my sons and I decided to try our hand at raising monarch caterpillars in an aquarium. We put a sponge in a small dish filled with water and stuck fresh milkweed around the edge. We put 4 caterpillars on the milkweed, and provided fresh foliage almost daily (BOY! do they poop a lot!)We topped the aquarium with some window screen held in place with some elastic from my sewing kit. Soon we had 4 Chrysalis' hanging from the screen. The first butterfly emerged on Sunday, which we released on Monday. We all watched in fascination this morning as the second butterfly emerged! The whole thing took less than 2 minutes...I'm glad we caught it. It was amazing.
