This has been a fabulous monarch summer after three years of tiny and absent populations. Monarchs have been increasingly abundant in central Maine since 20 JUN 2006. Adults are common, larvae are present throughout large patches of milkweed and can be found even on single isolated milkweed plants. I have a pupa (formed last evening) in a jar on my desk today (1 SEP 2006). We have also observed small larvae collapsing or dead on several occassions. Predators? Parasites? Too much glycoside? Several single adults moving at ground level late afternoon (after 4 PM) 31 AUG 2006 toward SW on a NE breeze.
