Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/11/2006

Number: 1

This is that interesting time of the year when we have a few, but a steady few, monarchs that decide they want to move to a different location in Texas on a heading between South and Southwest. What their reason is for what we have taken to calling the "premigration" migration might just be that they are relocating but watching as it heads in a dedicated SW direction sure gives one the feeling that it has set on a 700+ mile trip to central Mexco before the real migrants are here. This always happens right after the first of September when a cool front has made it past the coast and carried out into the Gulf ... and in this case, 10 days into September, we have had four cool fronts that made it far into the Gulf, brought the temp down and have even given us 2.50 in. of rain Sat. and 1.05 on Sunday. They may not be in diapause which would make them true migrants, but many citizens have been seeing a small number of monarchs across the state since the 1st and they certainly are showing all the signs of a true migrant.
