Yesterday from 9:30 to 4:00, I drove SW from Abilene in the middle of West TX to Eagle Pass in SW TX. A distance of 300 miles.
I saw 20 monarchs. Not one flying in a SW direction. In fact, they were all headed N or NE, with a couple headed SE. I checked the heading of the one going SE with the GPS.
The region recently (over the last 2 weeks) got several inches of rain.
Wildflowers were blooming everywhere, puddles and seeps were common, grass very green. Temps only in the high 80s, partly cloudy. Monarchs were seen from Eldorado down to Dolan Creek. This is the region where latifolia is fairly widespread and in good condition, succulent despite earlier drought.
