Reported to monarch biologist Dr. Lincoln Brower:
I got back from VT yesterday and saw an astonishing number of 5th instar (and a few smaller) caterpillars on the milkweed there. In about 15 minutes, my brother and I collected 20 and I saw others that I did not bring in. I thought they would all go into Js but only 6 did before I left, so I had to take the rest outside and set them on milkweed to fend for themselves on the last day I was there. The weather was magnificent. In addition to the caterpillars, which may not make it to adulthood before frost, we saw adults flying around.
