Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/10/2006

Number: 1

Sunday (Sept 10th) was without a doubt an amazing sight to behold at the park (Holiday Beach Migration Observatory ). The entire day was cloudy, winds from the South at 10-15mph and temperature remained between 55-60 degrees F. Every Monarch that flew into the park, remained at the park in small roosts between 100-200 butterflies per tree: every other tree in the SW corner of the park was filled with Monarchs. This was amazing to see but the bad news was that ALL of the Monarchs were out of my reach! Yes, these Monarchs were gathering in the cottonwoods 50-60 feet above the ground. An occasional five or ten would flutter off the leaves, then return to their roost - always beyond the reach of my net. If I only had a cherry picker or one of those machines the hydro workers use to maneuver about the lines and trees.
