Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/01/2006

Number: 1

I was walking my dogs about 6:00PM on Sept. 1 and noticed 2 monarchs flying around. I had not seen many all summer. Suddenly there were 3 more and then as we walked closer to a weeping willow tree, a large bunch of monarchs took to wing. Without being able to count them, I would estimate several hundred butterflies were scattered in the trees. In all, they were roosting in about 10 large trees. They were hard to spot when they were roosting, but the minute we walked under the trees, they would fly around. The weather was cool - upper 50s over night. On Saturday, Sept. 2, we had cool, rainy weather. The monarchs stayed around all day. On Sunday, there were less, and then by Monday they were gone. Interestingly, on Wednesday, Sept. 6, a friend who lives about 1/2 mile south of me had a very large group of several hundred monarchs roost in trees around her house and stay until Sunday, Sept 10.
