Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/13/2006

I saw over 100 butterflies near Geist Reservoir. They were fluttering and fanning their wings. They were on bushes, not feeding. The weather was humid and had rained the night before. Later at home I saw the monarchs. They were gathering on an ash tree in a sheltered area near Fort Harrison Park. They seemed to congregate on two branches of this tree. Again fanning and quiet. Occasionally fluttering in the small secluded area of my back yard.

It rained overnight. I wondered "Where do butterflies go in the rain?" Sure enough the next morning there they were, on the same two branches. Coloration dull. At around 9:00 saw some fluttering brighened wings but no sun to reflect.

9/15 - 9/16
The monarchs have gone. Saw only one butterfly on the 16th.
