Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/19/2006

Number: 1

The first of our caterpillars came out of it's chrysalis today. It took 15 days. Matthew noticed first and the kids were able to watch it come out...we released it later in the day onto some Physostegia, but it started to sprinkle so we brought it up on the porch. We did not see when it flew. 2 more Chrysalis to go, and we are interested to see if it will take the same amount of time. It is starting to get very cold at night 38 predicted for tonight so we are hoping they will come out and start their journey south!

We are hearing from many people that they are seeing large numbers of monarchs this year which matches our experience. Met an older man at the library yesterday looking for books on monarchs for his 3 yo grandson...it was fun to share some of the information we've been learning and to point him to this website (thank you Journey North!) and also to some of our favorite books.
