On a trip to a berry farm to pick raspberries we saw large numbers of monarches necturing on alfalfa growing in fallow ground between the berry patches, and roosting in nearby trees as well. It was about 2:00 in the afternoon on a bright, sunny day, with temperatures in the mid 70s. I'd estimate one monarch per every two square yards, along with several other species. Upon our return from picking, about an hour later, there were slightly fewer in the alfalfa and the ones in the trees had gone.
Interestingly, there were no butterflies in the raspberry rows - just in the alfalfa.
