Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/22/2006

Number: 1

We were in Riverside Park at 12:10pm on a sunny clear day. Temperature was in the upper 60's with a gentle breeze. Monarchs were fluttering around the Buddlea bushes. They were arriving from a Northerly direction, one or two at a time. They arrived in the garden area almost always coming through one particular line of trees. About 30 came through during the hour we spent there. They fluttered around the flowers, nectaring for short periods before heading off in a Southerly direction. Some went towards NJ across the Hudson, others followed the West Side Highway downtown.

We tagged 17. 15 of those were males. Only two were females. I wonder what that means. On Wed. when we were tagging, there was a fairly even split between males and females.
