I have no idea what's happening anywhere else (non-Essex County)
this year, but we have been having an amazing early Autumn Monarch
emergence and migration. Today in our ~5 acre meadow (unmown) there
were over 200 Monarchs counted as they nectared on Goldenrod and
skimmed low across the grasstops. There were also many, many
uncounted Monarchs moving high up and southward. Every Goldenrod
plant seemed to have one or more (sometimes 6!) fresh Monarchs.
They have simply outnumbered every other species that I have
observed in our 'patch' in the last month. Spectacular!
