Mrs. Swentzel's third grade class in the Byram Lakes School of Stanhope, NJ (Byram) released two male monarach butterflies today. These monarachs had been raised in the classroom. The butterflies were found on our local milkweed, collected and brought to the classroom, where we watched them develop from the small caterpillars to butterflies. It has been an exciting time. We marked the directions of North and South with a compass and took note of the wind and its direction. Then we released the butterflies. They slowly wound their up into the sky and seem to head toweard the East-Southeast. We talked about the direction they went and think that the wind had an affect on the butterflies flight path.
