Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/25/2006

Number: 1

Although we were to have a wet weekend, the rain was light and the temperature warm. In addition, it did not rain the whole weekend as was forecasted. My students saw a lot of butterflys this weekend. If they weren't flying, they were eating on butterfly bushes and other nectar producing flowers. There was a pretty good wind on Saturday and many were fighting the updrafts to get to the flowers. Once individual saw approximately 23 roosting in a tree and another saw a fairly large group flying together. Altogether, my students and I saw over 100 monarchs this weekend. I still have a female hummingbird eating on my butterfly bush and feeder. I was suprised that it was still around.
