Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2006

Number: 1

Denise Gibbs, of the The Chincoteague Monarch Monitoring Project reports:

10/2/06

Monarchs migrated down the island by about 1,300 per hour for most of today. Winds were from the NW at 10mph, full sun with temps in low 70's. It was quite a show!

9/29/06

This was our best monarch migration day yet! The Cape May monarchs finally arrived here. With winds WNW at 15mph there was a steady flight of monarchs all day, right up to about 7pm. The 4 pm census indicated about 1,000 monarchs per hour were passing through. Get ready, all you monarch watchers at Kiptopeke!

9/25/06

Migrants were on the move for most of today during NW winds at 10mph. Monarchs averaged about 140 per hour between 9am - 3pm. Other migratory insects seen in huge numbers were common buckeyes, green darners, black saddlebags and wandering glider dragonflies. Tree swallows numbered in the thousands and there was a steady flight of peregrines, merlins, bald eagles and osprey. Quite a day!
