Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/26/2006

Number: 1

Reported to the MassLep listserv:

Brian C. just called me from Gooseberry. He had seen about 30 Monarchs in 20 minutes pass by his school so decided to drive down there in late afternoon to see if anything was going on. The rest of this is capitalized because this is how he was talking:

ā€¯GOOSEBERRY IS COVERED WITH MONARCHS!! THEY ARE ALL OVER THE TREES AND FLOWERS AND FIELDS AND TRAILS!!! ON THE CEDAR TREE BY THE TOWER (UP THE HILL) THERE MUST BE THOUSANDS OF THEM!!! I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE!!!! I ESTIMATE AT LEAST 13,000 MONARCHS, THIS IS WITHOUT GOING INTO BUSHY AREA!!! THEY ARE HANGING ON THE TREES, LIKE HUNDREDS HANGING ON A TREE!!!

Brian has been going to Gooseberry for years. He started out at Allens Pond where he saw about 350 Monarchs on goldenrod, mostly nectaring, there were some migrating. A couple was at Westport Town Beach this morning
