Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/26/2006

Number: 1

Monarchs are still streaming through Lawrence. I saw at least 28 as I drove along the road atop the Clinton Lake dam this morning. The road is roughly 1.5 miles in length. More monarchs are passing by my window this morning - at a rate of 1-2 per min.

The predicted arrival of monarchs from the north for Lawrence is the 8th -11th of September with an anticipated peak around the 20-23rd.
The first monarchs arrived on the 11th but we are seeing a broad peak that started around the 20th but will probably continue through tomorrow. After Weds the weather is likely to be less favorable but we expect to see some monarchs through the first week of October and a few stragglers later in Oct.

Some monarchs are always late to join the migration. This morning I found 9 fifth instar caterpillars in Waystation #1. Given the cooler temperatures these individuals probably won't emerge as adults until after the 15th of October.
