Beverly on Rt. 97 just past the Wenham line in the
vicinity of Beverly Municipal Airport and nearby Wenham Lake
Here I
counted 1,000 or more Monarchs. Many were roosting in trees and many
more were nectaring at asters and goldenrod. Some individual aster
plants had 10 to 15 Monarchs clustered upon them. This had to be the
biggest congregation of Monarchs in many years in Essex County,
especially in areas near the coast. In one of my previous posts I
reported a huge abundance of them in Maine and so predicted this great
influx we are witnessing now. As long as the days are still mellow and
warm and nights cool but frost free, we should still see these
impressive aggregations for at least another week or so.
