This morning I observed by far the heaviest directional monarch movement of the fall in our Reston VA location. During a 90 minute meeting, 11 AM to 12:30 PM today, I watched a stream of monarchs approaching our building from the ENE, stopping at times to nectar at goldenrods, asters and Eupatoriums, and then continuing on a mostly westerly bearing. Monarchs were passing at about 1 per minute-- a high rate for a location not part of any type of funneling landform and in the middle of northern Virgnia's suburbs.
Winds are from the SSE at about 7-12 mph. An approaching front from the west should bring possible thundershowers late today.
