Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/28/2006

Number: 1

Yesterday afternoon I went out to my car at approximately 4:30 PM. I noticed a monarch drifting by (heading SW)so I decided to linger for a while and during the next 30 minutes counted 11 monarchs - all heading SW. This is the FIRST time in the 30 plus years that I have lived in Concord that I have witnessed monarch migration here. I think the likely reason for my observation is that monarchs were moving across a very broad front and probably in very large numbers. Given the date and this movement, I'm inclined
to think that this year's migration may be unusually massive and sustained.

Summer monarch production in this area was above average . . . in fact I saw more monarchs here in July and August than in any previous year. It will be interesting to see how the season plays out in Cape May. I'll be
