Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/26/2006

Number: 1

Reported to the MassLep listserv:

Not only are there the thousands reported for Gooseberry Neck and other places, they're still up here on the North Shore too!

This evening 9/26 Joe Stichter walked out across the marsh road to the end of Nelson's Island in Rowley (part of Parker River NWR). Between about 5:45 and 6:30 p.m., as the western sun warmed the area, he saw 2,000 to 3,000 (estimate) Monarchs, all clustered on every available stalk of seaside goldenrod which lines the edge of Nelson's Island. There were more on the many asters in bloom. An amazing sight. Then, as the sun began to set, he saw them all begin to rise and move en masse toward the tall oak and other trees back on the land---presumably they are now there roosting in the trees overnight.
