Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/29/2006

Number: 1

My Earth Science classes have been making migration observations the entire week. We count for 10 mins. and multiply by six to derive an hourly rate. We then average each class members rate to calculate a class rate. I then have several class rates averaged together. Here are this week's results:

9-26: 4 per hr

9-27: 8 per hr

9-28: 3 per hr

9-29: 138 per hr!

A good indication of peak migration.

Many observations were made of butterflies at altitudes of 50-100 feet.

All observations were made at the same time each day (1015-1200), and from pre-determined observing posts aroung our school. Students are going to count this weekend to compare daily rate changes.
