Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/27/2006

Number: 1

On Wed 9/27, I drove to New York from Jackson, N.J. and had the roof down on my car. I was moved to tears by the numbers of monarchs that I saw. Its amazing that I made in to the city in one piece because I couldn't keep my eyes out of the sky. In NYC for two days; saw many, many monarchs (100s) flying south on both Wed and Thurs. Many were at the 10th story or higher ht. so there were probably more that were hidden from immediate view. It's literally raining monarchs this year!

I was driving into the city on 9/27 from Jackson from around 12 noon , arrived at 2:20 pm ( was late for a meeting, so I recall the time; however, the "wave" continued throughout the day.

On Thurs 9/28, the "wave" was just as impressive. I stated in Brooklyn, Wed night and drove back into the city around 11:30 Thur. I couldn't believe the numbers I was seeing once again, while driving. I made a colleague come outside when I got in to work (E 25th and 1 Ave). I counted over 50 monarchs in a few minutes. We stayed outside for about a hr. watching them. Some were as high as 10 stories, others much lower--my guess is there were many we couldn't see.
