Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/29/2006

Number: 1

We live and school in Northeastern Pennsylvania, where milkweed grows well. This summer we saw a remarkable number of monarchs, and raised nine ourselves from caterpillar through butterfly (three males, six females). The last of the butterflies emerged from its chrysalis yesterday 9/28/06, and was released today 9/29/06. I think we harbored two different species: two of the butterflies were smaller and a darker orange than the others. Of these two, one was male (butterfly #9), and one was female (butterfly #8). The other seven butterflies were larger and a bright, lively orange. Was it just coincidence that the two darker ones were the last to go into chrysalis stage? #9 was interesting also in that he chose to attach his silk to the vertical side of the butterfly habitat instead of hanging freely from a horizontal plane.
