Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/30/2006

Number: 1

Today at 1:05 p.m. I went back to my dog's favorite frisbee field, and, as we stepped down into the field, I started counting monarchs! I saw one after another, and quickly called my neighbor (who raises them) so she could share in the excitement. She joined me and together we counted 64 monarchs within 65 minutes! They flew in a westerly direction and most flew high (a number of them catching currents and soaring very high). The temperature was 63 degrees and the sky was overcast. The wind was SSE 9mph. This was so much fun to see, especially since I hadn't seen any monarchs yesterday. (It had rained the night before and was extremely windy--I don't know if that's why I hadn't spotted any yesterday.) At any rate--today was worth the wait!
