Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/01/2006

Number: 1

I observed 1 monarch about 4 weeks ago laying eggs on a vine called milk vine. I was very interested in this because I have not been sure that the vine is in the milkweed family. I gathered about 10 eggs shortly after they were laid and raised them on the milk vine. Only one survived past the pupa; nine pupae(sp?) turned brown and never produced a butterfly. I am wondering if the milk vine perhaps is a larvae food that does not nourish as well as the other milkweeds? I changed the food of the smallest caterpillar to butterfly weed and it has just successfully emerged. My science classes will release it tomorrow.
