Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/01/2006

Number: 1

My wife and I finished our tagging (154) on September 4th. The monarchs never came through in large numbers except on the 4th when we tagged 45 in two hours. It was lucky that we went out that day because the farmer cut his clover field on the 5th. The kids are still finding larva in our school butterfly garden which is surprising, and we still have two pupas left in the classroom. We have had monarchs hatching in the classroom since September 17th. We tagged 21 in the classroom, but have run out of tags.
We just released 5 untagged butterflies on Friday. This is the latest that we have ever had larva and pupa in our classroom in the 20 years I've been doing this. We had a lot of monarchs throughout the summer, but when August came the numbers dropped off significantly.
