Monarchs were flying directively SW, I noticed on my route from Charlotte, N.C. to Clemson, S.C, on Friday and Saturday. It was a beautiful weekend of 70-73df with crisp light winds, clear and sunny. The Monarchs were flying too high to catch but quite a nice scene seeing them fly right across the front field of Clemson Univ. where students were out enjoying the sun too. At the South Carolina Botanical Gardens in Clemson, there were hundreds of Monarchs nectaring on Buddleia and Lantana. I caught approx. 20 by the "cupping hands" technique. A few were fresh young Monarchs but many were a bit worn and faded - maybe traveled a distance?
