Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2006

Number: 1

Today started with rain and we're supposed to get thunderstorms this evening. But this afternoon was PERFECT for watching migrating monarchs. The sky was a beautiful blue with big white clouds, temp. 63-68 degrees, light wind W9. I met my friend and while waiting for her to come outside, I spotted the first floating over her house and then mine. She & I saw a total of 96 migrating monarchs between leaving the houses at 1 p.m. and returning at 2:30. Most flew overhead, quite a few flew right at us, and many flew down low (a few stopping at puddles in the soggy field.) A few took very high currents and soared. On our walk home, a neighbor out riding his bike (we'd told him about seeing so many yesterday) called out that he'd seen at least 15 during his outing. It was a beautiful day to be outside monarch watching!
