Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2006

Number: 1

The butterflies were flying along the beach and above the dunes near the Atlantic Ocean side of Fire Island. They were going by about three to six at a time, with about 10 feet between each group. Some were closer to the ocean, and others were flying a bit north of the dunes. It was a beautiful sunny day, and they were all heading in the same direction -- west, toward the mainland. We guessed that hundreds, maybe thousands, were eventually passing by. I've never seen anything like it.
