Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/30/2006

Number: 1

Had an interesting experience on Nut Island this week end, not with standing the 30 or so Pheasant flushes, I had the experience of walking in to shrubbery that was a staging area for hundreds if not a 1000 Monarch butterflies on Saturday.

The Monarchs were waiting out a fairly strong direct wind from the south. They were gathering or staging on the most southerly tip of land on nut Island. It was the most incredible and unique experience, I walked in to the middle of the cloud and just stood there admiring the hovering mass. I walked up to them not noticing a thing until I was close enough to reach out and touch some of them.
