Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2006

Number: 1

On Sunday, October 1, 2006, we were sailing in and around Smith Creek at its juncture with the Potomac River at Kitt's Point, and up the St. Mary's River to St. Mary's College. During our sail, we counted 72 monarch butterflies, all of which seemed to rise from the water. Some followed the boat and even flew in the slot between the jib and the mainsail. About a third of the way up the St. Mary's, we counted a clutch of about 30 rising in concert. Quite beautiful.
