Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/03/2006

Number: 1

Our last classroom monarch hatched very early Tuesday morning in our classroom before I got to school. This hasn't happened before. In the past they always hatch between 8 and 10 in the morning. I couldn't find this one even after searching in all of the usual spots they hide in the room. The kids looked too, but no monarch. Imagine my surprise when I opened one of my desk drawers on Wednesday morning and discovered a monarch fluttering around. It was in good shape and we released it at noon on Wednesday. I don't know how it got in there, but it survived. This is the latest that we have ever released a monarch in my classroom in the past 20 years.
My wife and I found a 5th instar caterpillar in the school butterfly garden on Oct. 1st. I've been searching for it, but haven't seen it the past two days.
