I have captured several Monarch caterpillars to rear so I could tag the butterflies. My granddaughter, Caroline, has been anxiously waiting for a butterfly to come out. Today is Saturday. When we got up this morning, we had a butterfly coming out of the chrysalis. We monitored its progress and after about four hours it had moved to a different location in the cage. She had learned this week in school how to properly hold the butterfly, and how to tell if it was male or female -- she is in first grade. Hurray for teachers who teach things like this! Caroline held the butterfly while I tagged it, then we went outside and she released it.
