Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/08/2006

Number: 1

I finally have tiny caterpillars! Monarchs come back to California to overwinter. In my many years of teaching I've almost always had large caterpillars to start the school year, but the last three years have not had them until mid October.(Global Warming?) Their favorite food is a narrow leaf milkweed which is in bad shape now on its way to going dormant for the winter. This time of year they have to use the Mexican milkweed which I fortunately have a lot of this year.
I think I will need to change the month I teach about Life Cycles in the classroom!
