Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/09/2006

Number: 1

From 10 a.m. -10:15 a.m. this morning (10/9/06) and did a quick count to see if the monarchs are moving in Oklahoma City, OK. My observations are below. Sky is mostly cloudy, wind calm, and temp is 67 f, with light rain approaching from the west.

Looking up I counted butterflies within my field of vision for one minute at a count period (then resting my inflexible neck in between!). Most butterflies are between 50-500ft above the ground headed SW.

October 11
We just visited our butterfly garden here at the Oklahoma City Zoo and found 200+ monarchs necarting mainly on the crownbeard that has taken over a slope on the west side of the garden. Temps started off in the low 40's warming to the low 70's over the past few hours, sky clear and wind has been light out of the south. Butterflies are determined to nectar with little directional flight.
