Today I left Dover, DE, and spent the day in Ocean City, MD. I saw about 8 migrating monarchs up next to the dunes and ocean--all were flying west. But around 2:30 p.m. on the drive home from Ocean City (between 127th street and up through Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach, DE) I began tallying monarchs. Many were flying west and south, but the majority were feeding on blooming goldenrod at the center of Route 1. I counted a total of 66 monarchs in a 15 minute drive (and that total would have been much higher had I been able to slow down and get a better look!) You could see 5 and 6 at a time clustered on each plant, feeding. The beach temp was about 65 degrees and it was a beautiful sunny day--breeze along the coastal area. Cold front and rain coming, so I was glad to see so many migrating today!
