Was driving back from HEB Camp near Leakey, the frostweed had been nectared out by snouts, although there was still an abundance of cowpen daisy - still didn't see but a handful of monarchs along the river).
On the drive back along Hwy 39 at sunset I started to see multitudes of monarchs flying above the road just west of the 1st Smith crossing.
Stopped
to take pics when I could actually see some clusters on trees. Several hundred (hard to count in the waning light) roosting in a chinkapin oaks.
Thought I had missed them totally this year.
