Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/14/2006

Number: 1

I was out on my apt deck and happened to look up into the cloudy sky and noticed several monarchs fluttering overhead all heading south. I realized I was watching a migration. A cool front had come into the area yesterday (10/13), so I imagine they are riding the north wind south. Some were lower in altitude than others; being nearsighted I cannot imagine how many I didn't see, but I saw at least 30+ monarchs in 30 minutes of time. Oct. 14 at 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The lower flying monarchs were fluttering, but the higher flying apparently were riding wind currents. Some "couples" were circling each other as they flew, like a tag game. It was neat to see as I had never seen. They flew usually spaced greatly apart, but some were close together. The temp. outside was in the 70s, maybe 80s, which is cool for Austin, central Texas area.
